Domestic vs cross-border geographic scopes for card payouts

The geographic scope of a card payout defines whether it's considered domestic or cross-border. Card schemes set their own rules which determine how a transaction's geographic scope is calculated, using the following values:

  • Acquirer country - The country Checkout.com's legal entity is incorporated in.

  • Destination country - The country in which the card payout recipient's card was issued in.

  • Merchant country - The country the merchant's legal entity is incorporated in. This is the transaction's origin country.

  • Sender country - The country of the card payout sender's residential or registered address. This value is not used in the geographic scope calculation.

The following table shows the scheme's geographic scope definitions:

Mastercard Send The merchant country and destination country are the same. The merchant country and destination country are not the same. Card payouts to overseas territories or crown dependencies are considered cross-border.
Visa Direct -  if the acquirer country is the UK or France The acquirer country is the UK or France and the destination country is the UK or any European Economic Area (EEA) state, including Gibraltar. The acquirer country is the UK or France and the destination country is not the UK or any EEA state, including Gibraltar.
Visa Direct -  if the acquirer country is not the UK or France The acquirer country and destination country are the same. The acquirer country and destination country are not the same.
