Visa payments declined with response code 20065 on September 4, 2026

Between 22:00 UTC on September 4, 2026 and 01:08 UTC on September 5, 2026, a problem at a single card issuer caused elevated Visa payment declines. The issue is now resolved.

What happened

Overnight on September 4 into September 5, 2026, one card issuer had a problem with its own authorization systems. Visa payments made with cards from that issuer were declined, even where the card and the payment details were valid.

Visa confirmed the cause was internal to the issuer. No Checkout.com system was at fault, and payments made with cards from other issuers processed normally throughout.

More than 10,000 payments were declined in total before the issuer restored normal service.

What you saw

Affected Visa payments were declined with response code 20005, 20065, or 20091. For what each of these codes means, see API response codes.

Because the issuer declined these payments, no funds were taken from your customer.

What you need to do

The issuer has restored normal service, so you can retry any affected payment as a new payment and expect it to process as usual.

If you want to confirm which of your payments were affected, contact your account manager or request support.
