What do Pre-auth and Post-auth mean for Fraud Detection?

For the Fraud Detection solution, we use the following terms for risk strategies:

  • Pre-auth – Before the authentication stage for a payment. Authentication is the process of ensuring that the person attempting to make a payment is the legitimate cardholder.

  • Post-auth – After the authorization stage for a payment. Authorization is the process of verifying the customer's payment method, confirm sufficient funds or credit, and checking for fraud before approving the payment.
